High gasoline prices. High unemployment. Massive debt. The American
economy sure could use some good news. Well look closer and you’ll find some. The Gulf of Mexico’s offshore oil and gas industry provides home grown energy that helps fuel America and our economy. It’s the source of 30% of our oil and 11% of our natural gas . And the good news, if allowed by Washington the Gulf could do a lot more. Think jobs. Today the Gulf energy industry supports ۲۴۰,۰۰۰ jobs all across the United States . By 2013 that figure could goto 430,000 jobs. That means more jobs for Virginia, Ohio, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Colorado, California and many other states that are far from the Gulf. Think economic stimulus, the oil and gas industry is the second largest source of federal revenue behind only the American taxpayer. And it all starts in the Gulf. [MUSIC] Which could generate $45 billion dollars in economic grown by 2013. So much good news. And all we have to do is let the Gulf get back to work. but here’s the bad news. But Washington has slowed the pace of work in the Gulf, in turn slowing America’s economic recovery. Remember the moratorium on deep water drilling ? Well that’s been lifted. But permitting still lags far below historic levels. The result? America relies less on domestic energy producers and more on foreign imports. Good news for foreign workers, bad news for Americans. The Gulf of Mexico could do more to fuel our recovery but Washington must do more first. Stop the permitting delays. Open up new offshore areas for exploration. If we provide more home grown energy , we can create more jobs and stimulate economic growth across America. Let the Gulf get back to work and get America back to work.
